Last week I had my annual eye checkup with my doctor and I'm happy to report I still have perfect vision. :) Well, almost... I have an eye condition known as Pinguecula which are yellowish deposits at the edge of my eyes near the cornea. It's not a serious condition but it can grow to interfere with my vision. The causes of Pinguecula are several, firstly it is genetics and secondly, they can be caused by prolonged exposure to the sun and because I was born and raised in Asia where we enjoyed tropical weather all year round, he suspects that was the primary cause. Thankfully it is not a serious condition though I hate the way they make my eyes look, like they are a little dirty and not as clear as I like them to be. I want clear eyes, free of any stain except for those that are supposed to be there :). So I asked Dr. Mowbray what can I do to get rid of them. He said "nothing"... :(
But he suggested that there are a few things I can do to prevent or diminish the yellowish deposits by doing the following:- Wear good quality sunglasses that protects your eyes from Ultraviolet rays;
- Take 1000 mg of Vitamin C daily because it is an anti-oxidant that helps breaks down the yellowish particles.
Following the above instructions are easy because I now have health reason to wear sunglasses, not to mention fashionbable one. :) And also, Vitamin C tastes like candy so I have no problem taking them at all. But the good doctor advised not to chew on those vitamin tablets because they can ruin my teeth. Darn... I love my white teeth too much to do give them cavities.
So protect those beautiful eyes from the sun by good quality sunglasses and take your vitamins! It's good all around.
To your health,
Lisa
Hi Lisa,
ReplyDeleteI have those pinguecula too. My eyes look unhealthy! How are your eyes doing now? Is the vitamin C any good??
I'm looking for ways to diminish the growths, although I know they probaby won't become less...
Kind regards,

Hi Evelyn:
ReplyDeleteThe vitamin C is supposed to control the growth of the yellow pigment. My doctor said it's unlikely the pigment will go away, mainly just stop if from growing is key. Also wearing sunglasses when out in the sun also helps.

Hi, I read in a medical herbalist book that taking two 500mg eve primrose tablets each day(eve and morn) helps as well as taking cayenne pepper and garlic with your meals. I tried the eve primrose and have seen a definete improvement to my eyes the bumps are smaller and less yellow. So Im continuing with the eve prim, not tried the rest yet but working my way up to it. Best of luck to all who suffer this condition and hope the eve prim works for you.
